- A body of shallow salt or brackish water separated from the deeper sea by a shallow or exposed sandbank, coral reef, or similar feature.
- An inland broad expanse of salt water, usually shallow, and connected with the sea by one or more channels, or washes over the reef.
- An area of relatively-calm shallow water separated from the sea by sandbars or (usually) coral reefs.
