- Stuff made of wool and hair. patent felt is saturated with tar, and used to place inside the doubling or sheathing of a vessel`s bottom. employed also in covering the boilers and cylinders of steam-engines.
- A nonwoven or woven fabric with a dense construction that is face-finished through a process that shrinks and entangles the fibers to make the structure of the fabric indistinguishable.

1. the process of exposing wool fibers alone or in combination with other fibers to mechanical and chemical action, pressure, moisture, and heat so that they tangle, shrink, and mat to form a compact material. felting is generally carried out in a fulling mill.
