[2] a seaman. 17th century sailors were nicknamed “jack tarpaulins” after the tar-impregnated cloth used to make their foul-weather coats, and this became abbreviated first to “jack tar” and then to “jack” or “tar.” taranto:was the principal fleet base of regia marina (royal italian navy) in both world wars. after the 1940 defeat of france and neutralization of its navy, previously allied to britain, the italians outnumbered britain’s mediterranean fleet in every class of warship except aircraft carriers. their “fleet-in-being” at taranto, deep in the “instep” of the italian “boot,” posed a serious threat to british convoys en route to egypt. determined to redress the balance, the royal navy mounted the second sea-launched naval air attack in history. (the first, on christmas day, 1914, had been an rnas raid on the german naval base at cuxhaven, launched from three fast cross–channel packets converted into seaplane tenders.) the night raid, of november 11/12, 1940, was one of the most daring episodes of world war ii. a few obsolete, open-cockpit, biplane aircraft attacked the italian fleet in heavily-defended taranto harbor, transforming the balance of naval power in the mediterranean and leading naval pundits around the world to predict the end of the battleship. the tactics employed were carefully studied by the imperial japanese navy (see pearl harbor).
