|
A rail placed with its head along the outside and close to the head of the running rail 1 and sloped at the ends to provide a bearing for the overhanging portion of hollowed out treads of worn wheels.

- A rail placed inside the running rail which comes into contact with the back of the wheel flange and is used -1. in points and crossing work to provide steering of the wheelset such that the crossing nose is not contacted by the opposite wheel; and 2. on sharp curves (usually where there is significant passenger traffic) as a check against the opposite wheel of the wheelset climbing the high rail
- In a double-hung window, a horizontal meeting rail esp. one which overlaps the other meeting rail.
- Additional rail inserted inside the normal running rail at points or curves to provide guidance for the flange to ensure that the correct route is taken.
- Provided to provide the wheel flanges between the running rails and check rails to maintain stability when passing over points.
