- Физическое явление поднятия и удержания воды в тонких капиллярных трубках, порах, трещинах г. п. и почв под
- (1) явление проникновения жидкости во взаимосвязанные мелкие поры и каналы в твердом материале за счет поверхностного натяжения. (2) сила, благодаря которой жидкость при контакте с твердым телом распределяется между близко расположенными или прилегающими поверхностями соединения, которое нужно паять твердым припоем или склеивать.

- A property of a solid-liquid system manifested by the tendency of the liquid in contact with the solid to rise above or fall below the level of the surrounding liquid; this phenomenon is seen in a smallbore (capillary) tube.
- A phenomenon observable when making borehole-inclination surveys by the acid-etch method, wherein the upper surface of the dilute hydrofluoric acid is seen to curve upward, forming a concave surface. when the acid bottle is in a true vertical or horizontal position, the concave surface is symmetrical, and the resultant etch plane is horizontal. when the acid bottle is tilted, the concave surface is asymmetric in shape; the resultant etch plane is not horizontal, and the angle so indicated is always greater than the true inclination of the borehole. see apparent angle, capillarity correction.
- The peculiar action by which the upper surface of a liquid, in contact with a solid, such as the inside walls of a glass tube, is curved upward when the containing walls are wetted by the liquid and downward when not wetted. see meniscus.
