    2. A lifting device composed of one mast or pole and a boom or jib which is hinged freely at the bottom.

    3. One of a number of types of hoisting devices, equipped with tackle at their upper ends, that lift building materials at a construction site.

    4. A single spar, supported by stays and guys, to which a purchase is attached, used in loading and unloading vessels. also, a small crane either inside or outside of a ship.

    5. A fixed-base crane with a pivoted arm, used as a lifting device to raise or lower cargo (named after the portable gallows designed by thomas derrick, a 17th century hangman).

    6. The framed wood or steel tower placed over a borehole to support the drilling tools for hoisting and pulling, drill rods, casing, or pipe. sometimes incorrectly called a tower.

    8. A large load-bearing structure, usually of bolted construction. in drilling, the standard derrick has four legs standing at the corners of the substructure and reaching to the crown block. the substructure is an assembly of heavy beams used to elevate the derrick and provide space to install blowout preventers, casingheads, and so forth. because the standard derrick must be assembled piece by piece, it has largely been replaced by the mast, which can be lowered and raised without disassembly.
