- A scanning process for reducing image flicker in which the distance from center to center of successively scanned lines is two or more times the nominal line width, and in which the adjacent lines belong to different fields.

- Scanning method in which half of the lines are scanned in one field (odd-numbered lines), and the other half are scanned in the next field (even-numbered lines). thus adjacent lines of a complete picture (one frame) belong to successive fields. doubles the screen refresh rate as seen by the viewer and reduces flicker. at screen refresh rates significantly higher than the 25/30 frames/second used in tv systems, interlaced scanning may not be necessary.
- A technique of combining two television fields in order to produce a full frame. the two fields are composed of only odd and only even lines, which are displayed one after the other but with the physical position of all the lines interleaving each other, hence interlace. this type of television picture creation was proposed in the early days of television to have a minimum amount of information yet achieve flickerless motion.
- Process whereby the picture appearing on a video screen is divided into two parts. interlaced scanning reduces flicker by increasing the electron beam’s downward rate of travel so that every other line is sent. when the bottom is reached, the beam is returned to the top and the alternate lines are sent. the odd and even line scans are each transmitted at 1/60 s, totaling 1/30 s per frame and retaining the standard rate of 30 frames per second. the eye’s persistence of vision allows the odd and even lines to appear as a single image without flicker. international annealed copper standard (iacs): conductivity measurement system in which the conductivity of annealed, unalloyed copper is arbitrarily rated at 100 percent and in which the conductivities of other materials are expressed as percentages of this standard.
