Lord high admiral, английский
The office of lord admiral of england was effectively created early in the 15th century when thomas beaufort, duke of exeter, was appointed admiral of the northern and western seas (previously separate) for life. a lord high admiral of scotland was created at about the same time and appears to have initially been an hereditary office for the dukes of bothwell. by the act of union of 1707 the two offices were combined as lord high admiral of great britain. today the office is held by the reigning monarch. see also board of admiralty.
