  3. In military affairs, the lateral space between works or bodies of troops, as distinguished from distance, which is the depth or measurement in a direction from front to rear.

  4. The space between adjacent groups of ships or boats measured in any direction between the corresponding vessels in each group.

  5. The distance between two points or depths in a borehole. compare core intersection.

  6. The perpendicular distance between two parallel lines, example: the elevation differential between contour lines.
