(т.е. вещество в активной зоне ядерного реактора, служащее для уменьшения кинетической энергии быстрых нейтронов до величин энергии тепловых нейтронов, которые вызывают деление ядер урана-235, урана-233 и плутония-239.) наиболее распространенные замедлители нейтронов - графит, обычная вода, тяжелая вода и берилий, которые слабо поглощают тепловые нейтроны. в реакторах на быстрых нейтронах, в которых для деления используются нейтроны деления большой энергии, замедлитель отсутствует.
