- The top of the ocean, where the water meets the atmosphere. it`s not necessarily level!
- Refers to the position of the air-sea boundary, used as a standard in reckoning land elevations or sea depths. the concept is based on the assumption that, because the oceans are interconnected and water tends to find its own level, the ocean surface around the world conforms to the ellipsoid (flattened sphere) shape of the earth. in fact, the waters are in constant motion, influenced by tides, atmospheric pressure, gravitational effects, and wind conditions, while longer-term levels are affected by climate change. hence it is impossible to determine a figure for the entire planet. even on a local basis, levels vary quite a lot and the best that can be done is calculate mean sea level at a specific point and use that as a datum.
