- This refers to the use of "simple" tabular and graphical displays to gain a better understanding of the structure of a dataset. originally introduced by tukey to describe a collection of techniques that could quickly characterize a batch of data without recourse to "heavy" statistical modeling, it has since become an alternate approach to modeling, concentrating on intuitive and visual techniques for rapidly summarizing data, rather than classical statistical estimation and testing techniques. some of the commonly used techniques include "five-number summaries" (median, upper and lower quartiles, and upper and lower "fences"), box and whisker plots, and various smoothed histograms and scatter-plots. these can be linked in computer animations to allow various types of brushing to explore the linkage between various views. more complex techniques allow "grand tours" of high dimensional data, which may be either guided or run in a projection pursuit mode, where the program hunts for "interesting" views of the data. see also: data mining.
