- A general name given to the royal navy. also, any number of ships, whether designed for war or commerce, keeping in company. a fleet of ships of war is usually divided into three squadrons, and these, if numerous, are again separated into subdivisions. the admiral commands the centre, the second in command superintends the vanguard, and the third directs the rear. the term in the navy was any number exceeding a squadron, or rear-admiral`s command, composed of five sail-of-the-line, with any amount of smaller vessels.

In the united states, the definitive five-star ranks general of the army and fleet admiral were created in 1944, to honor a limited number of victorious senior commanders of world war ii. with the advice and consent of congress, president franklin d. roosevelt appointed four army and four naval officers to serve in the five-star grade for life. the admirals were william f. halsey jr., ernest j. king, william d. leahy, and chester w. nimitz. an overlooked fifth world war ii general was promoted in 1950 by president truman, and revolutionary war commander in chief george washington was posthumously given the rank by president ford in the centennial year of 1976. no other appointments have since been made, and the titles are effectively in abeyance. see also admiral of the fleet.

From 1937 to the end of world war ii, the royal navy tried desperately to throw off this hated royal air force designation in favor of air branch or naval aviation, but the old term was used consistently by the media, gaining general public acceptance. reluctantly the admiralty gave in and the name became official in 1946.
