A transmission network that carries high-speed telecommunications between regions (e.g., a nationwide long-distance telephone system). sometimes used to describe the part of a local area network that carries signals between branching points.

A series of directional microwave paths carrying common information to be relayed between remote points. the backbone microwave system is engineered to allow the insertion of signals, the dropping off of signals and the switching of signals along its length at designated relay points. in order to maintain the signals in the highest possible quality, the equipment used in the backbone microwave system is normally of a higher technical performance level than other microwave electronics in the network. antennas are always directional.
