    1. Wind resistance of the boat.

    2. The vacant space left between a shot and the bore of the piece to which it belongs, generally expressed by the difference of their diameters; it is for facility of loading, but the smaller it is the better will be the performance of the gun.

[1] generally considered to be the difference between the bore of a gun and the diameter of its projectile. more correctly it is the difference in their cross-sectional areas. in either case this leaves a gap through which gas can escape.
