- A serious infectious disease of children, caused by the bacillus corynebacterium diphtheriae, characterised by fever and the formation of a fibrous growth like a membrane in the throat which restricts breathing comment: symptoms of diphtheria are a sore throat, followed by a slight fever, rapid pulse and swelling of glands in the neck. the ‘membrane’ which forms can close the air passages, and the disease is often fatal, either because the patient is asphyxiated or because the heart becomes fatally weakened. the disease is also highly infectious, and all contacts of the patient must be tested. the schick test is used to test if a person is immune or susceptible to diphtheria. in countries where infants are immunised the disease is rare.
