  1. The voltage which an insulating material can withstand before breakdown occurs, usually expressed as a voltage gradient (such as volts per mil).

  2. A measure of the ability of an insulating material to withstand electric stress (voltage) without failure. fluids with high dielectric strength (usually expressed in volts or kilovolts) are good electrical insulators. (astm designation d 877.)

  3. The average voltage gradient at which electrical failure or breakdown occurs. expressed in volts per mil.

  4. The voltage gradient, expressed as kv/mm, that will cause a dielectric failure in an insulating material under very specific test conditions. dielectric strength does not imply that the insulator can withstand those potential gradients for an extended period of time.

The extent to which a fluid can withstand electric voltage without failing. dielectric strength is measured as the minimum voltage at which an electric arc passing through a fluid causes fluid breakdown. high dielectric strength may indicate that a fluid is a good electrical insulator, while low dielectric strength might possibly signal that a fluid is contaminated with water.

  6. Measure of the insulating value of an electrical insulating medium. the value depends to some extent on the test method used.
