The gaussian function is the classic "bell" curve, frequently seen in statistical analysis and as a weight function for combining values in interpolation (smoothing) nets. the relevance of a reference point to a specified value is proportional to the e-2(x-y)^2/s, where x is the value, y is the reference point, and s is a parameter that specifies the width of the bell. the gaussian function is also used as a radial basis function. see also: interpolation net.
