The fuzzy union of two sets is defined to be the set of all elements with non-zero memberships in either of the two sets. the membership function of elements in the new set is defined to be the maximum of the two memberships in the parent sets. see also: fuzzy set.

The gaussian function is the classic "bell" curve, frequently seen in statistical analysis and as a weight function for combining values in interpolation (smoothing) nets. the relevance of a reference point to a specified value is proportional to the e-2(x-y)^2/s, where x is the value, y is the reference point, and s is a parameter that specifies the width of the bell. the gaussian function is also used as a radial basis function. see also: interpolation net.
