A term coined by berliner to characterize the effects of partial look-ahead in game playing programs. if a program can look ahead to the end of the game, it could (theoretically) pick an optimal series of moves. when it can only look ahead partially (e.g., five moves in a chess game), the program may choose suboptimal moves because of its limited horizon.
