A cluster tree of variables is a tree of clusters of the variables. any cluster tree corresponding to a bayesian network is a representation of the probability distribution of the variables and the probability of the network can be computed from products and divisions of the probabilities of the clusters. figure c.3 shows a simple five-node network and its cluster tree representation. the arcs in the latter are labeled with the separating variables, which consist of the intersection of the adjacent nodes. figure c.3 — simple five-node network see also: bayesian network, junction tree.

A collection of sets is downwardly closed with respect to a property if when a set p has the property, all subsets of p also have that property. an example would be in a market basket analysis. if the set of items coffee, "pizza", and ``bread" were known to be independent, then by the nature of independence, the set of coffee and "pizza" would be independent, as would the set of "coffee" and "bread", and the set of "bread" and "pizza". see also: dependence rule, market basket data, upward closure.
