When a prisoner arraigned before a courtmartial is called upon to plead but remains silent this is technically termed “standing mute.” a prisoner may also stand mute by “visitation of god” (inability to articulate). under old english common law, standing mute was deemed equivalent to conviction, upon which judgment followed. nowadays, the court proceeds as though a plea of “not guilty” had been made. the same course is pursued when the prisoner refuses to plead properly in an attempt to obstruct the proceedings.

To silence an input signal on a mixing board (usually by pressing a mute switch) by severing the connection between the input module`s output from the direct out and the master out. muting is used to help create quieter final mixes by eliminating noise from temporarily or permanently unused tracks.
