    2. The curve formed by a flexible cord hung between two points of support.

    3. The sag in a line or chain that is suspended between two points. the deeper the curve the more the catenary. when its cable is almost straight the anchor is easily snubbed or lifted from the ground, but with a full catenary it lies along the bottom so that any pull tends to dig the flukes in deeper. the word is derived from the latin for chain, and one of the main reasons chain is used for anchor cables is that its weight tends to form a natural catenary.
