  4. A macro is a set of programming instructions, usually written in visual basic or javascript, that automates repetitive tasks, such as might be seen in a microsoft office application. while macros offer convenience, hackers have used them as a way to deliver malware targeted at microsoft and apple operating systems. using word and excel documents as vectors, hackers use macros to inject malware into systems. while macros in office are disabled by default, they are easily re-enabled by the user. anti-virus and firewall defences do not always detect malicious macros.
