- A subsurface layer of earth that is suitable to support a structure.
- The hard, solid rock at the earth’s surface or underlying surface soil; can be utilized as a firm foundation for a building.
- Any solid rock, in place, underlying the overburden. also called ledge rock and, colloquially, ledge.
