Mortar, английский
- Coulis;mortier
- A mixture of cement (or lime) with sand and water used in masonry work.
- A short piece of ordnance used for throwing shells, so that they may fall nearly vertical; they thus acquire force for breaking through roofs, decks, &c. it is fired at a fixed angle of elevation, generally at 45°, the charge of powder varying according to the range required.
- A short, large-bore cannon, designed to lob projectiles at high angles so that they drop almost vertically to break through decks, roofs, etc. in the age of sail, mortars were the only naval ordnance to fire explosive shells rather than solid shot. it was considered dangerous to have large stocks of shells on board and, moreover, below-deck reinforcing supports for mortar platforms occupied most potential magazine space, so bomb vessels were usually accompanied by an ammunition tender. moses’ law: a punishment under pirate law, sentencing the miscreant to thirty-nine lashes on the bare back. presumably the reference was to the 40 days moses spent fasting in the wilderness before receiving the ten commandments, but why the last stroke was withheld is unclear.
