Purchasing managers' index (pmi)

    A monthly report by the chartered institute of purchasing and supply, the index is widely used by industrialised economies to assess business confidence. germany, japan and the uk use pmi surveys for both manufacturing and services industries. the numbers emerge from a series of questions regarding business activity, new business, employment, input prices, prices charged and business expectations. the measures are turned into indices, with a reading below 50% indicating declining economic activity, and a reading above 50% indicating an increase. it is a leading indicator of output growth.
