- Fucus natans, or gulf-weed, the sea-weed always to be found floating in large quantities in that part of the atlantic south of the azores, which is not subject to currents, and which is called the sargasso sea.
- [1] in general, a tangled mass of seaweed, usually encountered in relatively calm and warm areas of water. from the portuguese sargaco = gulfweed. [2] specifically, in 1492, christopher columbus, heading (he hoped) for the fabled riches of asia, sailed through what he termed the mar de sargazo (sea of weed) that covers upwards of 518,000,000 square hectares (two-million square miles). as columbus discovered, even in light winds its extensive patches of floating seaweed are easily parted by sailing ships. nevertheless, generations of sailors were terrified by the belief that any ship which ventured into the sargasso would be held in its grip until the crew died of starvation.
