    Tooth, английский
    1. One of the hard bodies or processes usually attached in a row to each jaw, serving for the prehension and mastication of food, as weapons of attack or defense, etc., and in mammals typically composed chiefly of dentin surrounding a sensitive pulp and cove

    2. A characteristic of paper, a slightly rough finish, that permits it to take ink readily.

    3. One of a set of bones in the mouth which are used to chew food (note: the plural is teeth. for other terms relating to the teeth, see words beginning with dent-.) comment: a tooth is formed of a soft core of pulp, covered with a layer of hard dentine. the top part of the tooth, the crown, which can be seen above the gum, is covered with hard shiny enamel which is very hard-wearing. the lower part of the tooth, the root, which attaches the tooth to the jaw, is covered with cement, also a hard substance, but which is slightly rough and holds the periodontal membrane which links the tooth to the jaw. the milk teeth in a child appear over the first two years of childhood and consist of incisors, canines and molars. the permanent teeth which replace them are formed of eight incisors, four canines, eight premolars and twelve molars. the last four molars (the third molars or wisdom teeth), are not always present, and do not appear much before the age of twenty. permanent teeth start to appear about the age of five to six. the order of eruption of the permanent teeth is: first molars, incisors, premolars, canines, second molars, wisdom teeth.
