, аргентинская республика (republica argentina), государство на юго-востоке юж. америки. 2767 тыс. км2. население 33,5 млн. человек (1993), св. 90% - аргентинцы. городское население св. 86% (1990). официальный язык - испанский. большинство верующих - католики. аргентина - федерация в составе 22 провинций, федерального (столичного) округа и национальной территории огненная земля. столица - буэнос-айрес. глава государства - президент. законодательный орган - двухпалатный национальный конгресс. восточная часть аргентины равнинная, на западе - анды, на юго-западе - патагонское плоскогорье. климат на севере тропический, южнее субтропический, на юге умеренный. средние температуры января на севере 28 °с, на юге 10 °с, июля соответственно 18 и 1 °с. осадков от 100-300 мм на западе до 1400-1600 мм в год на востоке. главные реки - парана, парагвай, уругвай, чубут, рио-негро, рио-колорадо. влажные луговые степи, саванны, субтропические леса (преимущественно в горах). национальные парки: науэль-уапи, лос-гласьярес, лос-алерсес, ланин и др. в древности территорию аргентины населяли индейцы. в 1-й пол. 16 в. ее завоевали испанские конкистадоры; в стране утвердилось крупное феодальное землевладение с использованием рабского труда. в 1816 в ходе войны за независимость испанских колоний в америке 1810-26 создано независимое государство объединенные провинции ла-платы (в 1826 преобразованы в федеративную республику аргентина). в 20 в. в аргентине укрепились позиции иностранного капитала (с сер. 19 в. - главным образом английского, затем сша). с 1930 страной управляли главным образом военные, проводившие политику в интересах латифундистов, крупной буржуазии и иностранных монополий. после 2-й мировой войны большим влиянием в аргентине пользовался х. д. перон (избран президентом аргентины в 1946), сочетавший популизм с мероприятиями, направленными на укрепление позиций национального капитала. в 1955 перон был свергнут военными, однако влияние перонизма в широких массах сохранялось (в 1974 перон был вновь избран президентом). с 1976 установилось правление военных. в этот период (в 1982) аргентина, не признающая британского суверенитета над фолклендскими (мальвинскими) о-вами, предприняла неудачную попытку овладеть ими. аргентина - индустриально-аграрная страна с высокотоварным сельским хозяйством. доля в внутреннем валовом продукте (1990, %): промышленность 23,6, сельское хозяйство и рыболовство 16,7. добыча свинца и цинка, нефти и природного газа, урановых и других руд. производство электроэнергии 50,9 млрд. квтчч (1990). пищевая (преимущественно мясохладобойная), текстильная, кожевенно-обувная промышленность, машиностроение, черная и цветная металлургия. нефтепереработка и нефтехимия. в сельском хозяйстве господствует крупное землевладение. основные сельскохозяйственные культуры: пшеница, кукуруза, ячмень, овес, подсолнечник. плодоводство. главные отрасли животноводства - скотоводство и мясо-шерстное овцеводство. поголовье (1990, млн.) крупного рогатого скота 51, овец 29. рыболовство. длина (1988, тыс. км) железных дорог 34,1, автодорог 211,4. тоннаж морского торгового флота 2,5 млн. регистровых брутто-тонн (1991). главные морские порты - буэнос-айрес, росарио, ла-плата. экспорт сельскохозяйственных продуктов (ок. 80% стоимости - мясо, шерсть, кожи, зерно). основные внешнеторговые партнеры: сша, бразилия, германия. денежная единица - песо.
