Navarino bay (battle), английский
In october 1825, during a temporary cease-fire in the war of greek independence, a three-nation fleet, commanded by british vice admiral sir edward codrington, accompanied by french vice admiral compte henri de rigny, and russian kontr-admiral count login petrovich van der heiden was sent with orders to enforce the armistice but avoid hostilities except in self-defense. they advised the ottoman commander, ibrahim reis-pasha, they planned to enter the harbor peacefully for further negotiations. however, noting that the turco-egyptian guns were run out, the allied ships cleared for action, but kept their cannon inboard with ports in the half-open, fine-weather cruising position. codrington ordered his marine band to play cheerful music as they anchored in the middle of a semi-circle of turkish warships. a british frigate sent its cutter to ask one of the turkish ships to make space by moving its anchorage. the boat was unarmed, but a trigger-happy turkish marine decided it was hostile and fired a single musket shot. his aim was good and he hit the boat’s officer. in return the frigate’s marines gave covering musket fire and, on hearing their fusillade, an overexcited egyptian cannoneer discharged his weapon at the french flagship, which replied with a full broadside. like nelson’s famous engagement at aboukir bay, the ensuing battle was a duel between anchored gun batteries, rather than a conventional fleet action. muzzle-to-muzzle, the two sides blazed away at each other until the franco-russian-british alliance— with fewer, but larger and more heavily-gunned ships—had sunk or destroyed more than three-quarters of the turco-egyptians, inflicting tremendous loss of life, but suffering few casualties themselves. in an unintended action, nominally neutral powers had irreparably crippled turko-egyptian sea power and paved the way for russian imperialism. six months later, russia attacked turkey on the pretext of supporting the still-undecided greek struggle for independence. with constantinople threatened, turkey sued for peace. under the 1829 treaty of adrianople, russia gained the mouth of the danube, and the eastern black sea coast; while serbia, wallachia, and moldavia were granted full autonomy. then the great powers got into the act and, three years later, the treaty of london recognized greece as an independent kingdom.
