- 1. in general, any significant group of warships which is considered too small to be designated a fleet, but otherwise not strictly defined by size. in some navies, the term flotilla may be used instead of or in addition to "squadron" to describe a significant group of warships smaller than a fleet.
- A division of a fleet, as van, centre, and rear squadrons. a flying squadron may be commanded by a rear-admiral, and consist of any class of vessels. also, a body of cavalry consisting of two troops, or from 80 to 150 men. squadron is the ordinary unit in reckoning the cavalry force of an army.

[2] a detachment of warships or subdivision of a fleet on special duty. usually fewer than ten ships. [3] an administrative group of similar type vessels, such as submarines or destroyers.
