  1. United states navy

  2. United states navy. usn sailor’s creed: as part of their “core values” all officers and enlisted personnel are required to acknowledge and support the statement: i am a united states sailor. i will support and defend the constitution of the united states of america and i will obey the orders of those appointed over me. i represent the fighting spirit of the navy and those who have gone before me to defend freedom and democracy around the world. i proudly serve my country’s navy combat team with honor, courage and commitment. i am committed to excellence and the fair treatment of all. at time of writing (2008), there is unresolved controversy and argument over whether it is appropriate for commissioned officers to affirm the latter part of the second statement (highlighted above). the reason goes back to differences between the oath of enlistment and the officer’s oath of appointment, both of which start in the same way: i do solemnly swear that i will support and defend the constitution of the united states against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that i will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; ... but the enlistee’s oath then says: ... i will obey the orders of the president of the united states and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the uniform code of military justice. so help me god. whereas the officer swears: ... i take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and that i will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which i am about to enter, so help me god. those who claim officers should not recite the creed contend that confining their allegiance to the constitution, while not requiring an oath to obey orders, is a deliberate congressional attempt to ensure that they will refuse illegal commands to do things prohibited by the constitution, even if ordered by senior officers up to and including the commander-in-chief (president). the debate continues.

  3. An act of establishing by pointing to the fundamental components, procedures, laws or forms of organization that a system must necessarily possess for it to be of a certain kind. so, the electoral process which determines the membership and composition of a governing group constitutes that government as a representative one. organizational closure (and several other requirements) constitutes a system as an autopoietic one.
