- A temporary watertight enclosure around an area of water or water-bearing soil, in which construction is to take place, bearing on a stable stratum at or above the foundation level of new construction. the water is pumped from within to permit free access to the area.

- (англ. cafferdam, голл. kofferdam), узкий непроницаемый отсек, разделяющий соседние помещения на судне. препятствует проникновению выделяемых нефтепродуктами газов из одного помещения в другое. коффердамы изолируют, например, жилые помещения от цистерн для жидкого топлива. на танкерах грузовые цистерны отделены коффердамами от носовых помещений и от машинного отделения. при перевозке грузов с низкой температурой вспышки коффердамы заполняют водой. скапливающиеся в коффердаме газы удаляются через вентиляционную систему. на военных кораблях устаревших конструкций коффердамом называют водонепроницаемые отсеки, расположенные вдоль бортов, не защищенных бронёй; служили для предохранения от проникновения воды внутрь корабля при подводных пробоинах.
