Broke

  1. Sentence of a court-martial, depriving an officer of his commission.

  2. Today an officer convicted by court-martial is dismissed, but in earlier days he was sentenced to be broke(n). as most had been at sea since the age of twelve or thereabouts, they had few skills for survival in civilian life and many soon found themselves penniless. thus, the term came into general use to mean bankrupt or short of funds. see also break.
