Pinnace

  1. 1. pinnace (ship`s boat), a small, light boat propelled by oars or a sail, used as a tender to larger vessels during the age of sail.

  2. A small vessel propelled with oars and sails, of two, and even three masts, schooner-rigged. in size, as a ship`s boat, smaller than the barge, and, like it, carvel-built. the armed pinnace of the french coasts was of 60 or 80 tons burden, carrying one long 24-pounder and 100 men. in henry vi. shakspeare makes the pinnace an independent vessel, though falstaff uses it as a small vessel attending on a larger. also, metaphorically, an indifferent character.

  1. 1. sailors subordinated to a navy trained and equipped to operate ashore temporarily as an organized infantry force, but at other times responsible for the normal duties of sailors aboard ship.

Competency in limited-scale land warfare—sailors performing as soldiers and sometimes providing land based artillery support—was an integral part of 19th century naval operations. in the royal navy, officers and seamen were specifically trained in land-based warfare by the gunnery school at hms excellent in portsmouth. in the united states navy individual ships and flag officers were largely on their own until 1891 when the bureau of ordnance issued “instructions for infantry and artillery, united states navy” which was generally compatible with army operations ashore. the achilles heel of naval infantry was invariably weak logistical support without which they could not sustain themselves for long. during world war i britain fielded a complete naval division (the 63rd) which fought in france and gallipoli but, unlike the typical naval brigade, it was created, equipped, and trained on shore rather than formed extemporaneously by the ships of a fleet or squadron.
