When a narrow beam of parallel rays strikes a lens obliquely, rays in the two opposite meridians focus at different points. the distance between the two focus points equals the degree of astigmatism caused. this troublesome error caused lens manufacturers to develop a corrected curve lens series. the idea is if specific curvatures are controlled for specific corrections, then marginal astigmatism can be controlled.
