- The degree of opacity of a fluid.
- Cloudiness due to suspended sediment or the growth of phytoplankton. the phenomenon prevents light from reaching lower levels, inhibiting the growth of aquatic plants and the fish dependent on them (latin turbidus = disordered).
- The decrease in optical transparency of a solution because of the presence of particulate matter. turn: the distance parallel to the axis of a yarn or rope in which a strand makes one complete spiral. (also see twist.) turned-over edge: a curled selvage.
