    2. The tissue which forms the outside surface of the body  his skin turned brown in the sun.  skin problems in adolescents may be caused by diet. (note: for other terms referring to skin, see words beginning with cut-, derm-, derma-, dermato-, dermo-.) comment: the skin is the largest organ in the human body. it is formed of two layers: the epidermis is the outer layer, and includes the top layer of particles of dead skin which are continuously flaking off. beneath the epidermis is the dermis, which is the main layer of living skin. hairs and nails are produced by the skin, and pores in the skin secrete sweat from the sweat glands underneath the dermis. the skin is sensitive to touch and heat and cold, which are sensed by the nerve endings in the skin. the skin is a major source of vitamin d which it produces when exposed to sunlight.

The outer planks or plating of a vessel. skin-friction: also known as viscous drag, is one of the four principal causes of resistance to movement through water. it is created by the skin of the hull rubbing against the boundary layer of the water it is moving through. near the stem this layer is usually relatively thin and laminar, but it becomes progressively thicker and more turbulent as it flows towards the stern. overcoming it takes energy which is subtracted from the power available to drive the vessel forward. see also eddy-resistance, parasitic drag, profile-drag, and wave-resistance. skip-bomb: to release an airborne bomb from such low altitude that it slides or bounces along the surface of the water to strike the target at or near the waterline.
