Blunderbuss
Глоссарий морской лексики и терминологии (английский язык) |
- A short fire-arm, with a large bore and wide mouth, to scatter a number of musket or pistol bullets or slugs.
- This was a small, compact, large bore, weapon with a unique funnel-shaped barrel, designed (like today’s shotguns) to deliver a large quantity of small projectiles over a wide area. it was more like a hand-held cannon than a musket, not fired from the shoulder, but braced against the hip to steady its enormous kick such a weapon was excellent for personal security, but had no real value on land battlefields, being ineffective beyond about forty feet. however, infantry combat had little in common with the tactics of a naval boarding party. at a range of about thirty feet it spread a six to ten foot cone of shot that was devastating on the deck of a warship. (the name is probably derived from the german donnerbusche meaning thunder gun.)
