Nautical stars, английский
About 72 of the brightest, which have been selected for determining the latitude or the longitude, by lunar distances, and inserted, corrected to the year, in the nautical ephemeris.
Nautical day, английский
- This day commences at noon, twelve hours before the civil day, and ends at noon of the day following. (see day.)
- In order to avoid a change of date during the night watches, and because midday was when the ship’s position, course, and run distance were recorded, the mariner’s day formerly began and ended with the noon observation. however, a ship at sea was thus twelve hours ahead of the civil day and, to add to the confusion (see day), when it entered port the civil day took precedence. on 11th october 1805, the rn switched to the civil day beginning at midnight. the usn automatically followed suit, because it used the british nautical almanac until 1852 when the american version was published.
