- A retired post-captain, who, not having served his time in that rank, is not entitled to his promotion to the active flag.
- When the british fleet was “colorcoded” (see british ensigns & admirals) a captain who had patiently worked his way to the top of the seniority list, only to find there was no vacancy for another rear-admiral of the blue, could be “yellowed”—that is promoted to flag rank “without distinction of squadron”— a somewhat dubious honor.
