Logistics officer

Морской словарь
This royal navy title, established in 2004, is the final metamorphosis of a job which may have begun as early as the 14th century and has been variously titled captain’s clerk, bursar, purser, paymaster, and supply officer. a logistics officer’s responsibilities involve ensuring that her/his ship has all the personnel and equipment needed for operational efficiency, and providing essential services through the ship’s chefs, caterers, stores accountants, stewards, and writers. he or she may also be required to advise the commanding officer on personnel matters and questions of probity and propriety. like all non-combatant naval personnel, the logistics officer has a battle station, usually related to damage control or first aid.

Logistic delay, английский

Logistic function, английский
Usually refers to the cumulative logistic function where y=1/(1+exp(-bx)). this function is commonly used as an output or signal function for neural network nodes and as a link function in statistical generalized linear models, both for its simplicity and for theoretical reasons. see also: signal function.

  3. A specialized form of regression that can be used to generate regression functions for binary and ordinal variables. it is a generalized linear model, using a logistic function to link the expected value of the response with the linear model. among the reasons that it is preferred for variables of this type because it correctly handles the bounded responses and the dependence between the error and the mean. (see figure l.3.) see also: data mining, linear regression. figure l.3 —

  4. A statistical method for analyzing the probability that multiple factors contribute to a state. logo (n)

Logline, английский
The sailing ship mariner’s speedometer consisting of a block of wood (called log-chip or logship) shaped like a quarter-circle with a lead weight on its circular “stern” and a long light line, wound on a reel, made fast to its pointed “bow” by a triangular towing bridle secured with a wooden peg. when the chip was thrown overboard to drag in the water behind the vessel, the lead weight held it upright and caused the line to unreel as the ship moved along. the logline was knotted at regular intervals of 14.4 meters (47`3"), with one knot after the first interval, two after the second, and so on. after 28 seconds, timed by a special log-glass (sometimes misnamed “half-minute glass”), the number of knots run out was noted. after the reading had been taken, a twitch on a “stray-line” pulled out the peg, releasing the bridle to make reeling- in easier. twenty-eight seconds are to one hour what 14.4 meters are to a nautical mile, so the knots run out represented speed in nautical miles per hour. there was also a 14 second glass, for a ship going fast—above about ten knots. the routine was the same, but the number of knots read off was doubled to give the speed. this obviated letting out too much logline, with the attendant time penalty for reeling it in. (see also knots per hour.)

Logistics branch, английский
Founded in 2004, this branch of the royal navy has a long history under other names. these and its current responsibilities are outlined under logistics officer. the usn equivalent is the supply corps.
