This greek sea-god was lord of the great river called ocean, which completely surrounded the earth, rose in the underworld of hades, and housed sun and moon between their setting and rising. he is normally depicted as an elderly man with bull’s horns on his head and crabs running around in his hair. the concept probably originated with the sumerians and egyptians, whose cosmology saw the earth as a raft floating on primeval waters.
