This uniquely nautical ceremony dates back to at least 1645, when it was ordained that: when a barge carrying an important visitor approaches the ship, trumpets are to sound ... until the barge comes within less than musket shot. at that time the trumpets are to cease and all as carry whistles are to whistle a welcome three several times. later, visiting dignitaries would be hoisted in a bosun’s chair while the boatswain passed orders by pipe (whistle) to the sideboys (hoisting crew). the heavier the person to be raised, the bigger the side-party would have to be, and different pipes (calls) were developed to summon an even number of sideboys depending on the visitor’s size. it was quite usual for the person’s weight to increase with his status and eventually the practice applied to the visitor’s rank rather than avoirdupois. nowadays, the call is piped twice, first as the visitor’s boat pulls alongside, and again when the dignitary mounts the accommodation ladder and steps inboard. this procedure is reversed when the visitor leaves. when coming aboard via a brow from the quay, there is only one pipe. traditionally, the side is piped whenever the corpse of a naval officer or seaman is carried on board, taken ashore for burial, or committed over the side to the deep.
