Visual recognition of approaching boats, английский
Both rn and usn boats use colors, flags, or symbols to indicate the status of their most senior passenger. a blue or green royal navy barge automatically signifies a flag officer, while an admiral’s flag on its forward staff indicates that he is coming on a ceremonial visit; if so a guard and band will be paraded and the officers greeting him will wear swords and medals. however, if a red disc bearing a white cross is inserted in a slot on the staff, he’s coming officially but not formally, and will be met by the captain and commander, but no guard or band. if it displays a white disc with a black cross, his visit is personal and informal, and he may even be in plain clothes (perhaps returning from a game of golf ). the u.s. navy places polished brass devices at the truck of boat flagstaffs to indicate the rank of the most senior person aboard. a spread eagle represents an official entitled to a salute of 19 or more guns (fleet admiral, chief of naval operations, commandant of the marine corps, service secretaries, etc.). a halberd (axe-like device) represents other flag and general officers and certain civil officials (assistant service secretaries, consuls general, etc.). a ball represents a captain or civil official (such as first secretary of a legation). a star signifies the presence of a commander or civil equivalent. for all other ranks the flagstaff has a flat truck with no distinguishing device. the head of the eagle and cutting edge of the halberd face forward, and the points of the star are aligned fore-and-aft. 347 visual similar devices on flagstaffs ashore indicate the rank of the officer commanding a headquarters or other shore establishment.
