    Sonar, английский
    1. Sound navigation and ranging (system)

    2. Sound navigation and ranging

    3. 1. an acronym for sound navigation and ranging, a method of using sound pulses to detect, range, and sometimes image underwater targets and obstacles or the bed of the sea. see also echo sounding and asdic.

    4. This acronym of sound navigation and ranging refers to a system for the detection of underwater objects by reflected sound (cf. asdic). the operational mode can be “active” (pinging) or “passive” (listening). several mass strandings of cetaceans have occurred simultaneously in time and space with naval exercises using mid-frequency active sonar. this relationship could be causal rather than coincidental and, before starting an active sonar search, it is now standard usn operating procedure for surface vessels to mount visual lookouts, trained to spot marine mammals with high-powered binoculars (see beaked whales).

    Sonar detection, английский

    Sonar dome, английский
A streamlined, watertight enclosure that provides protection for a sonar transducer, sonar projector, or hydrophone and associated equipment, while offering minimum interference to sound transmission and reception by reducing the effects of turbulence, wave slam, and minor collision. early versions were keel-mounted, made of steel-reinforced “egg box” construction, but they have now evolved into high performance lightweight shells, bow-mounted, relying on the structural and acoustic properties of advanced fiber composites.

    Sonar gap, английский
An area astern of a vessel where the cavitation and wake left by the vessel’s own propulsion system impedes the ability of hull-mounted sonar to detect any hostile vessel which may be following behind. see baffle zone.

    Sonar operator, английский

    Sonar room, английский

    Sonar transmission frequency, английский
      Рабочая частота гидролокатора /сонара/
