  1. A very fast sailing ship of the 19th century that had three or more masts, a square rig, a long, low hull, and a sharply raked stem.

  2. A fast sailer, formerly chiefly applied to the sharp-built raking schooners of america, and latterly to australian passenger-ships. larger vessels now built after their model are termed clipper-built: sharp and fast; low in the water; rakish.

A 19th century fast-sailing merchantman, fully-rigged with an exceptionally large sail area, designed for speed rather than cargo capacity, with a long, low, narrow hull, sharply concave knife-edged bow, and three to seven tall square-sailed masts. built specifically for the east indian tea trade, they were the fastest commercial sailing ships ever built. speeds in excess of 15 knots were usual, and in 1854 sovereign of the seas reported making 22 knots while running down to australia.

A special-purpose fuse (usually of high current-interrupting rating) designed to protect an electrical circuit or equipment from the effects of high available short-circuit current by limiting the amount of current permitted to flow through it. limiting height 1. the maximum height of a building permitted by code. 2. the maximum height of a partition or wall that can be designed and constructed without exceeding the allowable deflection for a given design load.

  3. A signal processor whose output is constant when the input signal exceeds a designated level. you can make a compressor into a limiting device by setting the compression ratio to 10:1 or greater, and by setting the threshold just below the distortion point of the device following the compressor in the signal path. limiting is most useful for preventing damage to hearing (in-ear monitors), or distortion from signal peaks or transients.
