    1. The cypselli of the ancients, and mother cary`s chickens of sailors; of the genus procellaria. they collect in numbers at the approach of a gale, running along the waves in the wake of a ship; whence the name peterel, in reference to st. peter`s attempt to walk on the water. they are seen in all parts of the ocean. the largest of the petrels, procellaria fuliginosa, is known by seamen as mother cary`s goose.

    2. The name given to various ocean birds belonging, like the albatross, shearwater, and mollymawk, to the order of tube nosed swimmers. tireless fliers by day, at night they rest on the water, many returning to land only to breed. wilson’s petrel (stormy petrel or mother carey’s chicken) is a surface skimmer and habitual boat follower. leach’s petrel has a bounding, erratic flight and breeds on islands off the new england coast. other species include the auk-like diving petrel, the albatross-sized giant petrel or fulmar, and the smaller fulmar petrel. the word comes from the latin name petrus, and refers to the birds’ habit of hovering just above the ocean waves, thus appearing to walk on the water, as christians believe saint peter did. petticoat-trowsers: 17th century seaman’s breeches with kilt-like legs. much favored by buccaneers. also galligaskins.
