- The act of taking air into the lungs and blowing it out again through the mouth or nose. also called breathing comment: respiration includes two stages: breathing in (inhalation) and breathing out (exhalation). air is taken into the respiratory system through the nose or mouth, and goes down into the lungs through the pharynx, larynx and windpipe. in the lungs, the bronchi take the air to the alveoli (air sacs) where oxygen in the air is passed to the bloodstream in exchange for waste carbon dioxide which is then breathed out.
